Research ByIQ is led by Paul Charlton — a polymath engineer whose work runs from analog lab automation to the foundations of digital media, finance and infrastructure. Recruited at fourteen as the youngest paid researcher at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, he has spent four decades building the layer other systems are built on.

At Apple he built QuickTime’s cross-platform engine, QTML, enabling the OS and instruction-set migrations behind modern digital media. At Intuit he re-architected QuickBooks into the backbone of small-business accounting. He built Chase Manhattan’s first graphical online banking system, and at D. E. Shaw worked alongside Jeff Bezos, John Overdeck and David Siegel on machine learning in quantitative arbitrage — before Amazon or Two Sigma existed. As Director of Computer & Software Systems for the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, he cut headcount and compute cost by 90% while improving uptime for 30,000+ volunteers.
